IN THE BEGINNING, A FRENCHMAN IN NEW YORK

the House of Jean-Marie ChanutIn 1860, a young twenty year old man from Auvergne, Mr Jean-Marie Chanut, immigrated to New York to seek his fortune. After having tried his hand at various trades, he entered a trading house at Gloves de peau.

A few years later, in 1880, he founded in New York his own trading house Gloves : the House of Jean-Marie Chanut and created a factory in Paris. Jean-Marie Chanut will propose Gloves only to his Parisian and New York customers at the beginning.

THE MAKING OF THE FIRST GLOVE ISOTONER

THE MAKING OF THE FIRST GLOVE ISOTONERThe company develops the first stretchable glove made of nylon/elastane with leather straps. They call it ISOTONER (a combination of the terms isometric and toning) to reflect the stretch and massage qualities of this glove. With huge success, this stretch glove will contribute to the reputation of the company.

THE TOTES STORY

In 1924, the Company was founded in Oakley, Ohio, a small suburb of Cincinnati. The plant was moved to Loveland, Ohio in 1942 where the very first totes rubber rain boots were manufactured. These rubber rain boots, called “totes” to emphasize how portable and easy-to-carry they were, eventually became the Company’s most popular product. In 1961, Brad Phillips, a Chicago businessman, bought the Company and changed the name to totes, Incorporated.

In 1970, totes introduced the first easy to fold collapsible umbrella in the United States and it quickly became a hit. In the 1970s, in addition to the folding rain umbrella, many products were introduced under the totes name, including totes rain scarves, rainwear, hats, expanding bags, and slipper socks. 1985 brought the development of the Chromatics program, a line of weather products targeted to the supermarket, drugstore, and mass merchandiser trade classes. About this time totes established offices in New York, Toronto, the United Kingdom, France and Asia.

THE BIRTH OF ARIS ISOTONER

In 1974, bought by the American group SARA LEE, ARIS changed its name to ARIS ISOTONER. The Saint-Martin-Valmeroux site is fundamentally transformed. Manufacturing is relocated and Saint Martin Valmeroux becomes a distribution center to cover all deliveries in France and then in Europe.

In 1994, ISOTONER launched the first brand of slippers in France. Then appeared on the market the timeless and now famous big knot ballerina. ISOTONER is today the only brand of slippers really recognized with 80% of notoriety.

TOTES ISOTONER : THE ARRIVAL OF AN UMBRELLA GIANT

In 1997, ISOTONER joined forces with Totes, the world’s leading producer of Umbrellas, to form the company Totes>>Isotoner. The world headquarters are in Cincinnati, OHIO. The new group with a common experience in the field of innovative product development continues to grow rapidly.
